welcome to

Mas de Capdaniel

25 km west of Montpellier, in the town of Gignac,

on the edge of the garrigue and in the heart of the Terrasses du Larzac appellation,

Mas de Capdaniel is surrounded by a natural setting of Mediterranean vegetation.

Access to the estate is via a path that runs along the scrubland made up of holm oaks, tall pines, arbutus, thyme and rosemary on the north side. On the south side, the vines descend gently towards the Hérault river.

In the distance, the Baudille peak and the Seranne massif.

This very open and luminous landscape is bordered at the opposite end of the valley by the foothills of the Larzac.

The estate takes its name from the old sheepfold, "Cap d'Aniel" means lamb's head.

The soil is worked with respect for the environment and the plant.

The vineyard marked by the freshness that descends from the mountainous plateau of Larzac,

promoting a slow and progressive maturation of the grapes is beneficial for the aromatic complexity of the wines.

A FAMILY STORY

Le Mas de Capdaniel has been run by the Joullié family for 4 generations; a continuity which made it possible to select the plots, to preserve the old vines, to transmit a passion and a know-how for the development of wines of character.

Since the 1950s, the harvest was vinified at the estate, by Eugène then Marcel,

in concrete vats and wooden casks, then sold in bulk.

In 2014, driven by the latest generation, operations took a turn,

Vincent and his children join forces and work together in the cultivation of the vineyard, in the wine making,

and the marketing of wines. This is how the first cuvées of Mas de Capdaniel are born.

Through a selection of grape varieties and blends,

A harmonious range develops that is both representative of the terroir and marked by identity.

Structured and elegant wines combining freshness and aromatic complexity, obtained in the plots then in the cellar,

where each step is given special care attention.

Today it is the turn of the fourth generation to take charge of the estate,

by perpetuating the tradition while bringing its own sensitivity.

The Mas de Capdaniel is also a place of life where we like to receive and share good times,

around a passion and hard work that translate into authentic wines,

which result from the alchemy between the palette of grape varieties, the hand of the winegrower and the signature of a terroir.

THE TERROIR

The vines are planted on clay-limestone and gravel soil, which allows the roots of the vine to seek the deepest freshness and aromatic complexity.

This Mediterranean terroir is also subject to influences from the high altitude areas of Larzac. This results in large temperature differences between night and day, especially during the summer when the grapes mature.

A VARIED VARIETY

The estate has a varied grape variety, typical of the Mediterranean terroir.

For red wines: Syrah, Grenache Noir, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre have pride of place. They are the grape varieties recognized in the AOC Terrasses du Larzac appellation.

The Grenache Gris grape, on the other hand, which had been planted and grafted directly on the vine in the 1960s, is cultivated and vinified for the Cap d'Aniel Blanc cuvée.

Vermentino made its appearance in 2017.

TRADITIONAL KNOW-HOW

The wine-making cellar is semi-underground, nestled in the undergrowth in a layout which naturally promotes temperature stability, and which allows the harvest to be received by gravity.

The vinifications are parceled. Each plot is vinified independently, in order to manage the desired maturities, and to preserve the identity and authenticity of each.

The winemaking method is traditional. Temperature control plays a key role during fermentation.

After fermentation, the wines are aged either in vats or in French oak barrels for aging, depending on the desired wine profile.

Bottling takes place at the estate. They take place in the spring, in the waning moon.
