Terrasses du Larzac
Welcome to Mas de Capdaniel,
in Gignac, in south of France, in the Languedoc wine region.
Vins AOP Terrasses du Larzac
Languedoc - IGP Saint Guilhem le désert
25 km west of Montpellier, in the town of Gignac,
on the edge of the garrigue and in the heart of the Terrasses du Larzac appellation,
Mas de Capdaniel is surrounded by a natural setting of Mediterranean vegetation.
An open and luminous landscape, facing Pic Baudille and the massif de la Seranne,
bordered at the opposite side of the valley by the foothills of the Larzac plateau.
The climatic influence of this relief moderates the Mediterranean heat, and provides that freshness that we find in wines.
Since 2021, the vineyard has been converting to organic growing.
From the 2024 vintage, all the production will be certified organic.

WINEGROWERS
After 3 generations, it was in 2015 that Sophie and Fredy embarked on the adventure and became winegrowers,
carried both by their respective roots, the passion for wines and life,
the beauty and energy that the landscapes emit.
The desire to bring Mas de Capdaniel to life.
Attached to the terroir and convinced of its qualitative potential,
they grow and vinify the harvest in the estate's old cellar.
A quest for meaning :
Develop wines that express and revael the authenticity of the terroir, stamped with its imprint,
combining freshness, finesse and aromatic complexity, obtained in the vine then in the cellar.
The vineyard is worked in organic farming, respecting the plant and the soil.
-
SINCE 1950
The estate takes its name from the old sheepfold, "Cap d'aniel" means lamb's head.
Since the 1950s, the harvest was vinified at the estate, by Eugène then Marcel,
in concrete vats and wooden casks.
In 2014, under the leadersheap of the latest generation, operations took a turn,
Vincent and his daughter join forces and work together in the cultivation of the vines, winemaking and aging of wines,
to the valorisation of the terroir. This is how the first cuvées of Mas de Capdaniel were born.

AN EXCEPTIONAL TERROIR
The fifty-year-old vines are planted on deep, draining soil of sedimentary, clay-limestone and gravel soil, pebble origin
.
A privileged natural environment, bordered by scrubland, trees and low walls, shelters for auxiliary fauna and rich biodiversity.
This Mediterranean terroir is also subject to influences from the high altitude areas of Larzac. This results in large temperature differences between night and day, providing this freshness and promoting slow and progressive maturation of the grapes, beneficial for the aromatic complexity of wines.

WORK IN THE VINEYARD
The vineyard covers 12 hectares in a single block, facing northwest, with a diverse range of grape varieties typical of the Mediterranean terroir.
Vines trained in goblet or trellis systems.
Red grape varieties: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsault
White grape varieties: Grenache Gris, Vermentino
Yields between 25 and 30 hl/hectare.
The work in the vineyard is done with respect for the plant and the authenticity of the terroir, without the use of pesticides or herbicides, in Organic Agriculture.

ON THE CELLAR
The winery naturally extends the work carried out in the vineyards. Vinification is done plot by plot: particular attention is paid to managing ripeness, in order to harvest each grape variety at the optimal time. The harvest is done by hand, with or without destemming, and the grapes are received by gravity. Each stage of winemaking aims to reveal the truest expression of the terroir.
Every action is guided by the desire to craft authentic, elegant wines that reflect their terroir. Old vines naturally offer beautiful concentration, guaranteeing depth and balance in the wines. Extraction is gentle, and temperature control is rigorously monitored.
The wines are aged in vats, barrels, or demi-muids of French oak. The building, nestled in the undergrowth, ensures stable temperatures for the aging process. Bottling takes place at the estate during the waning moon.
